Getting off a plane and heading straight to a party looking rested and energised is more difficult than it sounds. But if there’s anyone who knows how to do it – because extreme practise, of course, makes perfect – it’s Bella Hadid.
“I travel a lot and I often work directly after landing. I use my mom’s advice, keeping my skin as good as it can be. So on a plane I wash my face as soon as I get on, I have all my serums and my night cream. And then I fall asleep and do it again when I wake up,” she told us, in London for a party to launch the new Dior Backstage collection, which was debuted at the Dior Cruise show last week. “So by the time I get off the plane my face is well rested and moisturised. And I always have a concealer with me, especially when I’m super-tired to get those dark eye bags away.”
Hadid has experienced something of a packed summer so far, following trips to Cannes, Paris, New York and Monaco in the last month, as well as appearances on the Fashion For Relief runway and the Met Gala red carpet among them. Not events you can turn up in an old dress and some hastily-applied make-up for, then. And whilst the 21-year-old takes care never to complain – her manners are impeccable and she’s endlessly gracious – she is clear about the importance of taking care of herself when travelling and working as much as she does.
“I always keep my essential oils with me, and my crystals. I make sure I have a good energy on the plane because sometimes I panic if I fly too much. I’m alone most of the time so I need to make sure I have all my homey things with me. I make the plane my home,” she says. “I have all my crystals on the farm at home and we make sure they’re all charged before I travel. My mom sticks little ones around my suitcase when I leave which is really sweet. One of my make-up artists in Korea knows how tired I get and she gave me this box of liquid ginseng in little packets. It tastes horrible but it gives you this burst of energy. I’ve kind of veered away from coffee recently so I’m just trying to find the most holistic ways I can sustain my energy throughout the day. But most of the time, that energy comes from deep down. I have to push myself really hard when I’m in the zone!”
Hadid remains incredibly close to her family, including sister Gigi, and peppers the conversation with references to her loved ones. In fact, it’s her mother – who she describes as “the most selfless person in the world” – who she credits with her fastidious skincare regime.
“My first memories of beauty are from my mom, talking about keeping your skin amazing first, rather than about make-up. I rode horses my whole life so I wasn’t one to wear a lot of it,” she admits. “But I do remember going into my mom’s make-up cabinets when I was younger and finding the darkest eyeliner I could possible find and putting it on after I left for school, and then taking it off before I got home again. I was a very rebellious child with my make-up – I think because my parents didn’t really like it. But I would find little things that made me feel more like myself.”
Now, of course, with a Dior beauty contract to her name, Hadid has plenty of room for experimentation when it comes to beauty – as well as thousands of products to play with.
