Gigi Hadid on working in the same industry as her sister Bella: ‘We are each other’s biggest fans’

When it comes to taking over the fashion industry, Gigi Hadid says there is zero competition with her younger sister Bella Hadid. Speaking with her friend Serena Williams for V Magazine‘s latest issue, the 23-year-old model, who is seen catching air on a Sea-Doo in a custom Fendi look for one of her three magazine covers, opens up about her unbreakable sisterly bond.

I absolutely love it,” Hadid tells Williams on working in the same industry as her sister. “It’s very rare to have what Bella and I have in fashion, what you and Venus have in tennis. I feel very lucky to be able to have a piece of home in my work environment. We are each other’s biggest fans“. While Hadid asserts that the fashion-duo are the “least competitive” about their careers, she reveals, “We are more competitive about holiday cooking.”

On giving advice to Bella, Hadid says, “I personally really loved the challenge of learning a lot of the fashion ropes on my own when I started working in New York, so I didn’t want to take that experience away from Bella when she started”. Gigi adds, “I was always there whenever she had a question about a specific client or situation, but I tried not to be too protective. We’re always FaceTiming to keep each other company on work trips.”

Bella Hadid Knows How To Party

Creamy lipstick is a party buzzkill. Not only does it have a knack for getting everywhere (wine glasses, your chin, your date’s face) but it also needs to be coddled and reapplied until the moment you get home. This is precisely the reason you rarely see supermodel Bella Hadid in a bright lip color on major red carpets or industry parties. It’s not that she doesn’t love a pop of red lipstick—she just doesn’t want to deal.

Hadid prefers a no-fuss approach to party beauty: slicked-back hair, nude glossy lips, and a dramatic cat-eye that just won’t budge. Yet she’s the face of Dior Beauty and the new Dior Addict Lacquer Plump lipsticks. The hybrid lipstick-meets-balm-meets-stain formula somehow (through magic, we think) stays glossy, pigmented, and put for hours. It’s the kind of makeup unicorn that intends to get the party started and keep it going—and it’s the only formula you’ll see on Hadid’s lips these days. We sat down with the supermodel to learn about her recipe for throwing the ultimate party—from the long-lasting lip color she loves to her refreshing fondness for mini hot dogs.

Bella’s party beauty rules:
BH: “Especially for parties, I like to have my hair back. I don’t like to touch my hair, I don’t like to have to deal with it. Of course, with this new collection that we’re launching, this lipstick stays on so well and it stays on perfectly. I think that’s the best quality about it: it still looks glossy and beautiful but you can wear it all night. I love to have a look that I can wear for hours without touching and that’s long-lasting. It’s really perfect when it comes to this collection and what we did with this campaign.

Her favorite Dior Addict Lacquer Plump shade:
BH
: “There’s a red shade [J’Adior]. I am very self-conscious with my lips and with red for some reason. I have always had big lips, it makes them feel smaller. It made me self-conscious. But this red is so perfect and it lines your lips beautifully.

The lip colors she never wears:
BH
: “I am not a big orange person, I like to stay pretty basic with my lips. I love a good eye, some nice liner—so I like to keep [my lipstick] to red, browns, dark pinks. I am not good with the hot pink. I mean we did it for the campaign, and I loved it, it was such a beautiful color. I think I am too shy to wear a hot pink.

Bella’s recipe for a perfect party:
BH
: “I think the recipe for a perfect party is for sure my close friends around me. That’s usually how it goes with me and my group of friends. For me, I don’t like being around a lot of people I don’t know. I like meeting new people and I like experiencing it, but if I have my close group of girl and guy friends around that’s usually just how the party is and we usually make the party into something special if we’re all together. And of course, a Hendricks and tonic.

The best party playlist:
BH
: “Best new? Maybe, ‘Big Shot’ by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. It’s amazing. Old? I don’t know. I have so many types of music on my phone at this moment I could probably get you any era of dance music.

Bella’s ultimate party food:
BH
: “Mini hot dogs. Or chicken tenders and French fries. I love mini things, they’re good for snacking. You can eat a lot of them without looking completely horrific. You can get 20 mini chicken nuggets—no one’s counting. I love little sliders, chicken nuggets, like mini grilled cheese. Mini anything. Your dessert is your martini.

The supermodel hangover cure:
BH
: “I’ve been pretty good lately, I don’t have a lot of tips because I’m usually fine by the morning. I love a good steam in the morning if I can go swim or steam. Some people workout to get the toxins out. If I can get my body moving that’s usually the best thing for me, I come out feeling fresh as ever. A good little face mask. I tried doing ice, which actually worked. It’s very shocking and painful. But it works! It brings you back to life for sure.

On the ultimate party favors:
BH
: “If I could do party favors, that shit would be major. Everyone would get a free Juul, and a lipstick, of course, in my favorite shade. Maybe a little key chain with their name on it. No, that’s too personal. A little key chain with something cute on it—a little butterfly. I am loving this idea.

On her childhood birthdays:
BH
: “When I was growing up, up until I was 10-years-old, my Mom threw the most beautiful birthday parties for me. Then I guess after 10 they were like you’re old enough, you’re done. My mom would do ballerina parties and then I realized I hated ballerinas. My sister had a basketball party. We would have sports parties. I just remember my childhood, how my mom did really beautiful birthdays. She put a lot of time in. I will aways remember those times, from when I was literally four-years-old, riding my mini pony on the farm with my family. I don’t really remember any recent birthdays.

Into The Gloss: Bella Hadid’s Favorite On-The-Go Lip

1~403.jpg 2~367.jpg 3~344.jpg 4~322.jpg

“Before modeling, I had no idea about makeup, didn’t know what contouring was. I didn’t even own a concealer. When I turned 18, I started working with Dior, so I really had to restart. I was so nervous to meet Peter [Philips] for the first time, because he’s very ‘Peter Philips’. [Laughs] Now he’s just my cute, ol’ Peter! It was on a French Vogue shoot with Mario Sorrenti, and Peter painted my face with Picasso-inspired, extreme makeup. It ended up being so amazing. From then on, we’ve just had such a great bond. I trust him with my face more than anybody in the world.

The thing I love about makeup is its ability to enhance your natural features. Makeup can make you feel so much better—it’s always a one-up for me. Obviously beauty does come from the inside out, but that confidence also starts with how you feel when you walk out the door.

Peter has taught me a lot about seriously contouring and blending. It’s important to make sure everything is blended and nothing is stuck or clumpy. I like to be as fresh as I can be, but I think good makeup really starts with a solid base. You don’t want to put too much on, just where you need it. I love skin to be glowing and blushing—healthy looking skin. If you start there, your makeup look can be pretty bomb, regardless.

One thing Peter is always saying is to apply my mascara from roots to tips. It’ll make your mascara hold. If you put a lot of mascara on, it really makes everything elongated from the inner corners to the outside. When it comes to lips, I’m very grab and go. Perfect lips with liner are really beautiful, but I love a stain because if you put one coat on it’s super light, and it doesn’t look like you have too much on your face. I love the Dior Addict Lip Glow and the Dior Lip Maximizer. And I always end up having a taupe-y, gold eye. I love a cat-eye, but my favorite makeup look I’ve ever worn was probably from the Fendi show with the blue hair. It was an elongated liner that really looked like a cat’s eye, and a little bit of highlighter in the center of the eyelid. It was so cool. It was intense, for sure, but I’d always love to go back to that look.

When I’m not working, I literally am not wearing any makeup. The most I put on is a little mascara, which can’t hurt anybody. [Laughs] I don’t do anything too crazy on myself, but other people have really tried looks on me. I mean, they really go in.”

Bella Hadid Talks About New Dior Lip Color and Her Makeup Tips

When we meet Bella Hadid for a group interview in a suite at Sunset Towers in L.A., she’s in a silver blazer-style Dior dress. She’s sitting next to the iconic creative and image director of Christian Dior makeup, Peter Philips, and in front of them is a long row of shiny new Dior Addict Lacquer Plump lip colors in nudes, pinks, red, and one shocking plum—the latest makeup launch from the luxury beauty brand.

Bella smiles at Philips cheerily, and you can’t help but guess what kind of inside secrets they might have from shooting Dior beauty campaigns together around the world—the kinds of murmurs that never reach social media or the media media, like us four editors in a half circle around them. But on this day, we’re going to try. Below, all the surprising things we learned about Bella Hadid in 30 minutes.

As far as Bella is concerned, lip gloss was never out of style:
I love a lip gloss, and I always have my Lip Maximizer with me, and I love that feeling. [The new Lacquer Plump] can be a stain and a gloss. It depends on how you apply it. I know me and all my girlfriends love a good plump or a good gloss or a pop of a color, but I’ve never seen one that comes all together in one formula. It’s hard to put all those things in one.

She insists on doing her own lip liner:
I’m not really good at beauty hacks because I literally do just concealer, contour, brows—that’s pretty much all I do. But I love doing my lip liner on my own. Peter’s amazing with the way he does lips, but for me on a day-to-day, I love to do my own lips. I love to make sure it really follows the lines of my lips.

She struggled with a brow complex:
I’ve always had really thin brows, I got them from my dad. Growing up I was always self-conscious about my brows, but I really didn’t know you could do something about it. I did not know people did brows, that that was a thing, so I kind of really learned from the makeup artists I’ve been working with over the years. Brows are such a beautiful part of a woman and a man’s face, so to be able to enhance that is revolutionary for me. I definitely like to keep my eyebrows thin, but still fill them in, so…fake it till you make it, I guess [laughs].

Makeup did not interest her as a kid:
I always say this, but I really rode horses my whole life. I came home, did my homework, and had dinner with my family at six. I didn’t go out, I didn’t know what other girls were doing, I was just around my horses and my friends, and my horses definitely didn’t have a Lip Maximizer [laughs]. My mom grew up on a farm in Holland, and I never really saw her applying her makeup; it wasn’t something [where] I woke up in the morning and she was getting her makeup done. She was the only one with us three kids, so she was working her butt off to get us to school and to do everything, so I didn’t really have a lot of makeup inspirations in my family growing up. I think now that’s why makeup excites me so much. So on set, I’m looking around at all the products. I like to ask about the different products that come out and the way you put them on. I think that’s what’s so amazing about makeup and what excites me about it, but definitely [it started with] contouring…. It’s like, life-changing for sure. And brows. And learning about lip liners. Different things you can contour, your nose… I did not know that was a thing.

She recently “grew into her face”:
I think I had more beauty insecurities growing up than probably anybody. I wasn’t very secure with myself until very recently, so definitely my eyebrows [were an insecurity] and not really knowing about my face. I was kind of chubbier growing up until I was like 15 or 16, so there was a lot of things I had to kind of grow into, and I grew into my face a lot; even over the past two years, I’ve seen how much my face has changed. Even since this commercial that we shot, which we shot a while ago, a year ago. I was definitely very self-conscious, but we all are, and I’m trying to grow into myself, and we were all given the faces we were given. So I’m happy I grew into my face.”

She gets her style inspiration in her dreams:
It’s so funny because I actually have dreams; I’ll wake up in the morning, and I’ll have dreamt of an outfit and hair, and my hair and makeup will come, and I’ll be like, ‘OK, this is what we’re doing. This is what I’m wearing.’ Not even knowing, I’ll go into my closet and try to find the things I had in my dream, which sounds really crazy, but it’s really helpful. I love getting inspiration from old photos. I love looking at photos from like, the ’70s, and look at the girl in the back that’s wearing a pleated long yellow-and-brown skirt, and I’ll try to find it—and growing up, I spent a lot of time at thrift stores and vintage markets and flea markets at five in the morning to go pick out random things, and that’s what really helped me with my style and my taste because nobody was looking at me back then, so I was really able to wear everything I wanted to wear. And now all the styles I wore when I was like, 14 are coming back now, and people are going to try to find the best thing, and I’m like, ‘I’ve had that for seven years,’ so I bring that back, and that’s where my inspirations come from. And I also have amazing friends around me that are so creative, and their families are creative, and I’m able to really learn a lot about the people around me and the different lives everybody lives.

She’s obsessed with Carla Bruni:
I love Carla. Seeing photographs of Carla, it was always her natural beauty that I loved and the simplicity of her. I go in and out of my obsessions, but Carla has always been one that I really looked up to. Every shoot was kind of different for her, and there were eye-makeup looks…and the makeup looks that she would do really actually work so well on my face. I saw her at the airport like, a year ago, and she said, ‘You know, people say we look so much alike,’ and I’m like, [eyes wide] ‘I know, I can’t believe I’m standing in front of you right now.’ And she’s so amazing, I see the resemblance. I remember going through pictures with her, she had them saved on her Instagram. It’s honestly my honor, she’s so beautiful. She’s stunning. Inside and out.

She sees a lot of good in social media:
I think that social media has made a lot of girls more confident in themselves. I think that makeup today, and social media’s a big part of it, it’s given girls and boys—especially boys, which has been a come-up for anybody that wants to wear makeup—it’s giving people the freedom to do what they want to do and be confident with themselves. And sometimes off of YouTube and off those channels, they don’t really want to go outside; maybe that’s just something that makes them feel confident in their own home. I think that’s more up to the parents that they’re going to allow their 14-year-old daughters to watch YouTube tutorials, but if they’re allowed to do that, I think it’s a great way to learn, and I know a lot of my friends have learned how to do different makeup online, and it’s very entertaining, but I don’t think it’s something to get angry about.

Inside Bella Hadid’s Dior Beauty Party Prep Diary

1~393.jpg 3~339.jpg 4~318.jpg 2~359.jpg

After a month of fashion week shows, does Bella Hadid take time out to relax? Of course she doesn’t – for the 21-year-old model it was straight on to Los Angeles for the international launch party of the new Dior Addict Lacquer Plump lipstick, which she co-hosted with Dior make-up creative and image director Peter Philips.

Hadid, who describes the key components for a perfect night out as “my closest friends and good music“, swapped her usual slicked-back hairstyle for loose waves held away from her face with an elasticated headband, and graphic extended liner by make-up artist Nina Park. The secret to her flawless skin, still fresh-looking even after the long-haul flight? “Drink a lot of water and, when you can, use sheets mask to keep your skin hydrated,” she tells us.

Hadid was joined at the party, which took place at LA’s exclusive Poppy, by the likes of Winnie Harlow, Paris Jackson, Natalie Dyer and Camilla Belle. Guests enjoyed lip-shaped lollipops, glitter tattoos and the crowning glory of any good party – a photo booth – as well as getting a first look at Hadid’s Dior Addict Lacquer Plump campaign, which was filmed by Cass Bird.

Next on the schedule are two more days in LA, before she flies off to Shanghai for her next job. Her favourite way to spend any snatched moments of downtime? “I stay home, cook with my mom and watch movies,” she reveals. A girl after our own hearts. See inside her Dior Addict getting-ready photo diary here.
